Boiler feed pumps

The boiler is fed with water during loco movement by a pair of reciprocating pumps, one attached to each engine.

An additional cab-mounted pump can fill the boiler whilst stationary. Early pictures of 7109 show a reciprocating “Weir” pump in the off-side cab window ledge. On original delivery, an injector is believed to have been provided but was replaced by the pump early on in its working life.

The reason for changing from injector to pump is not clear. The contemporary conventional locomotives at Croydon Gas Works also had pumps fitted. My conclusion is simply that the gas works' maintenance staff were more familiar and confident with pumps than injectors.
